Portugal, INSEP in France and Japan among the countries for training camps that student-athlete attending the National Sports School are experiencing
During a press conference held at the National Sports School addressed by the Minister of Education and Sport, Dr. Clifton Grima as well as the Head of School Robert Magro more details were given about the training camps held last scholastic year and also this year. The Head of School Robert Magro emphasized how the school is being proactive in all the different disciplines at school inorder to give the best to all the students-athletes. In recent years the school has worked immensely to make the training camps a priority in school. A number of students already had an experience in football, waterpolo, badminton, artistic and rythmic gymnastics, triathlon, handball, squash and cycling. In the coming weeks more students from basketball and athletics will be training in Portugal while thanks to an agreement with INSEP in France a number of students from swimming and artistic swimming will be getting the experience there. Meanwhile, a group of football players from the school are going to Portugal as well as Serbia to train. Other three students from Judo will be getting an experience at a Judo University in Japan. The Minister for Education and Sport Dr. Clifton Grima said that these training camps are excellent and useful experiences for the local sport in general and thus all the National teams can benefit from it. These training camps are being made possible thanks to the ongoing work at the National Sports School.
As part of our ongoing efforts to promote and sustain the importance of reading amongst our students, all staff members and students at our school participated in the ‘Drop Everything and Read’ school-based initiative.
The National Sports School reopened after summer recess with a strong commitment to give the best to their students both in sport and academically. NSS does not only give the necessary teaching to its students but also leads them to a better level in their respective sport. During the first week of school, as was done in previous years, all sports and PE teachers were engaged in the physical tests of all students in the school. These included the Anthropometric Test, Power, Body Composition, Endurance, Flexibility, Speed as well as the ECG. The school has invested a lot of money in order to provide these tests for free to all the students. All results were recorded in order to keep account and work according to the individual and where it is most needed. Meanwhile, during the week all the students got to know more about topics such as recovery in sport and the importance of good nutrition, water and good sleep. The National Sports School also invested in a Body Composition Machine and measurements were taken of all students. These tests are deemed very important for the coaches and allows them to have a clear indication of the student/athlete individually.
The National Sport School recently organised a truly original Mother’s Day celebration for the students and their mothers.
The mothers who attended described the experience as unexpectedly emotional. Here’s what we did:
The activity took place at the Hilton and as the mothers gathered for what they thought would be coffee, biscuits and a series of speeches followed by lunch, their children were brought over by private and each mother was treated to an unexpected meeting with her child who presented her with a flower.
The students returned to school and Mass was celebrated.
After Mass we played a game where the mothers were asked how they thought their child had answered a series of questions about them. The answers were then compared, and the mothers were deeply touched at how well their children knew them.
This was followed by a short film we had shot a few days before, with the children reading out handwritten and personalised messages of love and gratitude. There wasn’t a dry eye left in the house.
Then a professional beautician demonstrated how to apply light makeup suitable for day time. Each mother was presented with a goody bag filled with samples of beauty and health products and the event was concluded with a buffet lunch.
I think we can safely say it was a roaring success.
As an end of year activity the Year 8 students gathered together at the Luxol Restaurant for a nice plate of pasta. It was a nice way to spend some time together away from the school desk and eat together. Special thanks to Mr Falzon at the Luxol restaurant for hosting us
