Week starting 23rd January was language week at NSS. Monday was dedicated to the German Language. The day started with an assembly during which the students were briefly introduced to the German Language and Culture. They were also presented with an informative video about the lifestyle of young people in Germany. A display about Germany was also set up in the school foyer. Year 9 students also participated in a karaoke, where they sang to songs in various languages including songs in German.
On Tuesday, NSS celebrated our national language; Maltese. During the morning assembly, four students from Year 8 Green presented information about the foundation of the Maltese language and also gave example of words coming from Arabic, Italian, French and also English. During break time, one could listen to Maltese songs and a display related to Malta and our language was exposed in the school foyer.
The English language was celebrated through three clips of students talking about the importance of the language and literature, why they enjoy lessons of English and about their favourite books and authors.
The Italian language was celebrated also during the morning assembly. Two ex-NSS students, who have been playing football professionally in Italy, gave their testimony; they emphasised the importance of learning a foreign language, in their case being Italian. We thank Kailey Willis and Nicole Sciberras for their contribution.
Thursday was dedicated to the French language at NSS! Years 7, 8 and 9 kicked off the day with a cooking session of savoury crêpes. Later on, the 12-year-olds took a quiz on French language and culture. Mr. Renaud Lallement (Cultural Counsellor at the French Embassy) and Mrs Doreen Farrugia (E.O. French) paid a courtesy visit to our school. The French Embassy kindly offered the school a French flag and map. This week, we also had three Karaoke sessions where students sang in different languages. The French language was also promoted during Wednesday’s school assembly through videos and students’ experiences. A display about France was also set up in the school foyer. Perfume samples (sponsored by Franks) and cheese samples of La Vache qui rit (sponsored by Alf. Mizzi & Sons Ltd.) were distributed to the students.
Spanish Language Day started off with a whole school assembly where two Year 8 students have presented a powerpoint presentation. Throughout both breaks students had the possibility to listen to Spanish music and buy Spanish typical non alcoholic Sangría.
