36 student-athletes from the National Sport School raise over 1000 euro for Puttinu Cares

A red-letter day today at the National Sport School when 36 of its student-athletes and their teachers and coaches braved the icy winter seas to swim from Golden Bay to the Riviera and back, a distance of one and a half kilometres.

Their aim? To raise funds for Puttinu Cares, a charity that helps fund treatment and accommodation for sick children who need to travel abroad.

The students who took part in this endeavor all have swimming as part of their sport training background: water polo, triathlon, swimming and artistic swimming.

Robert Magro, Head of the National Sport School who was on site to watch them set off, remarked how proud he was to see his students assemble on the beach early in the morning and use their sporting talent to raise funds for a noble cause.

“It’s good to see them excel in academics and sport competitions,” he continued, “but it’s something else again to see their generosity and altruism. It bodes well for their future as young men and women.”

“Remember, no one forced them to do this. It was all their idea,” he added.
